PwC called NFTs ‘the future of digital assets in sports’

NFTs and digital assets are one of the ten major trends within the sports industry, according to PwC’s Sports Outlook 2022 report.

From altering sports technology infrastructure to driving fan engagement, the report lists three of the main use cases for NFTs and how they’re going to shape the future of sports.

The first use case is collectible NFTs. This refers to traditional memorabilia like trading cards or tickets of historic matches that can be digitised, minted and traded on the blockchain.

The report added these collectibles could be displayable and shared across the metaverse.

Secondly, season ticket holders – NFTs could provide them with verified tokenised passes.

And finally, virtual access tokens for fans who prefer to pay more for a virtual experience and may not be able to attend games in person.

The metaverse lets us explore human imagination

In an interview, Sebastien Borget, founder of The Sandbox, shared some of his thoughts on Web3 and the metaverse.

According to Borget, the metaverse is a gateway to new experiences limited only by what users can think of.

He said: “Web 3.0 and the metaverse are enabling each of us to become an explorer of our human imagination, inventing new parallel universes where we can choose the experiences we want to live.”

The Sandbox founder also said the metaverse has already started to influence the way people “socialise, form economic relationships, and gather in communities.”

He said within a decade, there will be more developments in the space, adding: “We envision that within the next 10 years, the metaverse will have transformed profoundly how we’re thinking about the way we’ll be working, socialising, playing and earning through the economic opportunities and jobs it is creating.”
