THIS week saw McDonald’s enter the metaverse after it was announced the fast food giant had filed for ten new trademark applications and plan to build a “virtual restaurant featuring actual and virtual goods.”

UFC’s Khabib Nurmagomedov and Max Holloway went head-to-head in the first ever virtual fight, Samsung launched the Galaxy S22 in Decentraland and Gucci bought land in The Sandbox.

McDonald’s files trademarks for virtual restaurants in the metaverse

McDonald’s filed ten trademark applications to the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), covering both McDonald’s and McCafe.

The trademark applications cover “virtual food and beverage products,” including NFTs “operating a virtual restaurant online featuring home delivery,” as well as trademarked events and entertainment services under the McDonald’s and McCafe brands for “online actual and virtual concerts.”

Khabib Nurmagomedov and Max Holloway went head-to-head in the metaverse.

Nurmagomedov had teased a fight in the metaverse earlier this month when he announced his partnership with gaming company Legionfarm.

Shiba Inu will release virtual land in the metaverse

Shiba Inu will offer plots of virtual lands in a soon to be released metaverse.

The team behind Shiba Inu said in a blog post: “The metaverse is set to be one of the biggest areas within crypto for many to enjoy, using it as another great resource to offer crypto communities incentivisation, content, and regular royalties.”

A quarter of people will have spent time in the metaverse by 2026

One in four people will spend at least one hour a day in the metaverse by 2026 either working or socialising, according to research company Gartner.

Marty Resnick, research Vice President at Gartner, said: “By 2026, 30 per cent of the organisations in the world will have products and services ready for the metaverse.

“From attending virtual classrooms to buying digital land and building virtual homes, all these activities are currently taking place in different environments.

“Ultimately, they will take place in a single environment – ​​the metaverse – with multiple destinations linked to technology and expertise.”

Samsung hosts its Galaxy S22 launch event in Decentraland

Samsung unveiled its new range of Galaxy S22 smartphones at its virtual Samsung 837X space in Decentraland.

Over 100,000 users attended the “Samsung Unpacked 2022: The Epic Standard of Smartphone Experiences”, making it one of Decentraland’s most visited destinations to date.

Miller Lite’s virtual bar opens

Miller Lite has opened the first branded bar in Decentraland, as a way to advertise during the Super Bowl without buying a TV commercial slot.

Sofia Colucci, global vice president of Miller Family of Brands, said: “We have a lot of great partnerships with NFL teams throughout the year but were shut out of advertising during the Super Bowl game, so this pushes us to think creatively and also think of what feels really relevant right now.

“There’s no question that there’s a lot of excitement with the metaverse, and we wanted to participate but in a way that felt right for Miller Lite.”

Gucci buys land in The Sandbox

Gucci announced on Wednesday it had bought an undisclosed a mount of virtual land on The Sandbox.

Gucci will create themed experiences on The Sandbox inspired by its “Gucci Vault” platform, which lists items like Gucci-themed NFTs and vintage bags.
