SPOTIFY has launched a new digital space on the metaverse platform Roblox.

The world’s largest music streaming provider has become the first streaming service in the world to join the metaverse, creating a new virtual island on the virtual platform.

It will allow friends to gather to listen to their favourite songs together, as well as to take part in exclusive events such as meeting their favourite artists.

The new set up will comprise of a central mainland, known as “Spotify Island”, surrounded by a collection themed smaller virtual land masses.

Each one of the provinces will be themed based on a style of music, with the streaming giant confirming a K-pop themed land will be the first to launch.

An in-game merchandise store will also allow users to purchase items which they can then take into other parts of Roblox.

In a statement announcing the move to the metaverse Spotify said its project would be “a paradise of sound”.

The music platform added: “Through this interactive world, we’re creating a place where fans can link up and create new sounds together, hang out in digital spaces, and gain access to exclusive virtual merch.

“Spotify Island is an audio oasis that has it all.

“Roblox users can mingle with artists, complete interactive quests, and unlock exclusive content.

“Players can also enjoy an immersive audio experience by creating music and exploring sounds at the virtual beat-maker stations powered by Soundtrap.”

Spotify Island also includes a stage and screen – although the company refused to comment on speculation it is gearing up to showcase a series of virtual concerts.

While Spotify becomes the first music streaming platform to enter the metaverse, the industry has already held a number of virtual concerts and festivals.

Justin Bieber performed at a metaverse concert last November.

Last month, American rapper Snoop Dogg also released the first-ever virtual music video.

An early convert to the potential of the metaverse, the video for his track “House I built” was produced in the Sandbox.
