The metaverse is widely expected to fundamentally change the way that all of us work. However, rapid investment in virtual platforms and in blockchain projects also opens up hugely exciting opportunities to work in the development of the metaverse itself.

The metaverse may be an $800billion market by 2024 according to a recent analysis by Bloomberg and all this growth is going to require an equally vast and highly talented workforce. With $400billion of that revenue coming from games and game hardware, careers in game development are expected to expand rapidly.

Whether you are a designer, programmer, or social media marketing expert there has never been a better time to pursue a career in Web 3.0.

What metaverse jobs are being advertised in June 2022?

Meta

Meta, formerly Facebook, is an old staple of the metaverse industry, with many accrediting the Meta name change last year as one of the key moments in the metaverse boom. Recently the company has been having a rough time on the stock exchange; shedding $220billion of market value in February and hitting an all-time down 43 per cent from last year. However, the company still has a whopping 2,343 job openings listed and 1,000 remote opportunities available, so we have selected a few of the best openings in their Web 3.0 and metaverse division.

How can I build a career in the metaverse?

For someone at the start of their career, the metaverse can seem like a daunting industry to break into. Luckily, for those still developing their skills there are many new opportunities opening up for every type of person. We’ve broken down some of the biggest areas for building a career in the metaverse.

AR/VR engineer

Augmented and virtual reality are the technical backbone on which the metaverse will be built, but the skills required to work with this new technology are still scarce. Demand for AR/VR engineers rose 1,400 per cent in 2019 alone according to some estimates.

Those interested in this type of work should have a good understanding of a number of related fields of study. These can include: computer vision, deep learning, graphics, and a number of coding languages. While this may sound overwhelming, would be engineers might be encouraged by the average salary of $135,000–$150,000.

Cyber security

Web 2.0 already poses enormous security risks and an ever-evolving environment of highly advanced threats, Web 3.0 has the potential to make the internet even more treacherous. Given higher levels of data capture from wearable gadgets and the possibility of more businesses setting up in the metaverse, cybercrime is a serious threat.

A background in traditional cybersecurity is essential for this role. An ideal candidate would also be well versed in blockchain technology and have a great understanding of decentralised computer architecture.

Metaverse storytellers and writers

Those without a PhD in computer science need not feel disheartened, as creatives will also be needed for the metaverse to live up to its true potential. Video games on the metaverse will take the immersion and depth of gaming to whole new depths, and all that technical potential will need a good story behind it.

Whether it will be pay-to-earn crypto games or the next evolution of educational game design the metaverse needs people with strong writing talent. Applicants should have a good understanding of technology, but a passion for gaming and game design, strong writing skills, and a track record of writing success are ideal.

Hardware engineers

Of course, none of the software the metaverse is built upon is any good without hardware to run it, and the hardware needed for the metaverse will be more demanding than ever. Running 3D environments simultaneously for thousands of users all engaging through complex headsets and sensors, all without dropping a frame is challenge enough for any engineer.

Those looking to build the physical bedrock of the metaverse should ideally have several years of product design experience. Skills in electrical or computer engineering, especially in the field of optical engineering will put you well ahead of the competition.
