Who is Maggie Hassan?
Maggie Hassan was born on born February 27, 1958 in Boston, Massachusetts under the name Margaret Coldwell Wood.
Hassan graduated with a BA in history from Brown University in 1980 and then studied at the Northeastern University School of Law until 1985. It was at Brown University that she met her husband, Thomas Hassan, and the pair married in 1983.
Upon graduating, Hassan undertook a legal career, starting at the law firm Palmer & Dodge before working as associate general counsel for Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
In 2004 Hassan quit her life as a lawyer and swapped it for politics, representing New Hampshire’s 23rd district as a Democrat in the state’s Senate for a total of six years.

Hassan declared her candidacy for New Hampshire governor in October 2011, winning the race the following year and taking on the role in January 2013.
The Democrat held the position until 2017 when she entered Congress as a New Hampshire senator.
The contest was tightly fought, with Hassan only beating the incumbent Republican by about 0.1 per cent of the vote. She went on to be re-elected in 2022.
As a senator, Hassan has made crypto regulation one of her priorities.
She has pushed for greater oversight of crypto mining and for federal agencies to crack down on criminal use of the tokens.
“The anonymity provided by cryptocurrency has helped facilitate its use by criminals in a myriad of ways,” she said in 2021.
“These uses include drug sales over the dark web, payments for ransomware attacks, tax evasion, financing for terrorism and organised crime, money laundering, and more.”
Despite her warnings of crypto’s use, Hassan took donations from the crypto exchange FTX.

Maggie Hassan received $20,000 in donations from FTX’s disgraced former chief executive Sam Bankman-Fried.
The money for Hassan were just a small fraction of the $84million in donations to political candidates and organisations made by FTX.
Since the bankruptcy of the crypto exchange in November 2022, the company’s new management has requested politicians return donations made to them in order to repay investors and customers.
It is unknown whether Hassan has given back any of the money she took from FTX.
