INTERFACES launched as an NFT project in December 2021, quickly growing a huge following. However, just as its popularity was peaking, the creators announced they were suspending the project.
But what is the Interfaces NFT and will the project finally restart?
What is Interfaces NFT?
The Interfaces NFT, officially called Web Generated Modular Interfaces (WGMI), comprises of 10,000 profile photos.
Each token, randomly generated, depicts a 3D illustration of an animated character with completely distinctive features am unique backgrounds.

The project was started by three artists, husband and wife duo Anna and Arek Kajda, and their friend Daniel Linthwaite.
Taking a laid-back approach, the Interfaces official website said of the project: “No roadmaps or promises, just vibes.”
The creators targeted their NFTs at art lovers, with the idea being that those in receipt of one of the tokens could build an art collection.
Quirky visuals made Interfaces extremely popular after it launched, with fans lining up to own one of the NFTs despite little much else information being about.
Their website was still under construction when the project was suspended.
Why was Interfaces’ development suspended?
The development of Interfaces was suspended earlier this year after the founders said they had become “three very tired humans that are overwhelmed and burnt out dealing with an immense amount of stress”.
Fans of the NFT were given the devastating news in February.
Anna and Arek Kajda and Daniel Linthwaite said they came to the decision to put Interfaces on ice because it had become “a passion project that no longer feels like a passion project, and begins to feel more like a job”.
“Anybody who has followed our journey since the beginning will have hopefully seen the genuine energy, passion, and integrity that we’ve put into forming a community and creating artwork that resonates with you all,” they said in a statement on Medium.
“Unfortunately, it’s spiralled into something that’s so far away from the initial vision we had and where we wanted the project to be, that we’re no longer comfortable that it’s something we want to pursue.”
They added: “Whilst the finish line was almost in sight, in the past few months the speculation and hype has truly taken all of the enjoyment out of what we’ve been trying to do.
“This has only added to the mental and emotional burden of trying to bring the project to fruition.
“We have always prided ourselves on the ability to work to deadlines and challenging briefs, but this is of a different magnitude.”
NFT collectors have been hit by a number of scams in recent months, with creators of projects abruptly cancelling projects despite millions being invested in them.
The Kajdas and Linthwaite insisted there were “no additional details or rumours to unpack” beyond their stress following their decision to end Interfaces.
Commentators have said that the fact the identities of the three creators behind the project are known minimises the chance Interfaces was a scam.
When will Interfaces finally restart?
Unfortunately, it is quite possible the development of Interfaces will never restart.
In their statement announcing they were suspending the NFT project, the founders of Interfaces said that they “might not ever revisit the project” and added that even if they do make a return at some point, the project will not be as originally envisaged.
They said: “In a bitter blow for fans, they said: “We’re drawing a line under Interfaces and plan on taking some time away.
“The last six months have been a rollercoaster and we’re happy to be getting off to catch our breath.
“We might not ever revisit the project and we’re at peace with that, but if we do, we can categorically say that it will never return as a 10K collection. It’s not a viable route for us.”
There has been no update since the statement was released on February 27, 2022, leaving many to believe the founders will never return to the project.
